TACCIA Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Akane Fountain Pen Ink
Akane (“madder”) is a saturated, earthy red Japanese fountain pen ink with warm undertones. The shading shifts from rich crimson in concentrated areas to lighter rust tones in thinner applications, recalling the layered effect of traditional woodblock printing. Made in Japan as part of the TACCIA Ukiyo-e collection, this ink writes smoothly in both fountain pens and glass dip pens.
Akane is one of Japan’s oldest red dyes, made from the root of the madder plant and used in textiles since the Yayoi period over two thousand years ago. Red-dyed silk fragments from the Yoshinogari archaeological site are believed to be among the earliest surviving examples. The phrase “akane sasu” (“madder-glowing”) appears in the Manyoshu, Japan’s eighth-century poetry anthology, as a poetic way of evoking the sun and daytime, most famously in a poem by Princess Nukata. The box features Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “The Ring-entering Ceremony at a Charity Grand Sumo Tournament” (勧進大相撲土俵入之図, 1849), a vivid scene of a kanjin-zumo, the charity tournaments held to raise funds for shrines and temples that were the direct precursor to today’s professional grand sumo.
In the writing sample, the filled wash was painted with a brush and the linework was made with a glass pen, both on YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook. The 40ml glass bottle features Kuniyoshi’s original ukiyo-e on the packaging. Browse more colors in our curated Japanese fountain pen inks collection.
