TACCIA Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Azuki Fountain Pen Ink

Azuki (“red bean”) is a calm red-brown Japanese fountain pen ink. The shading moves from deeper umber in concentrated areas to lighter reddish-brown in thinner applications, producing a color with depth that stays readable for everyday writing. Made in Japan as part of the TACCIA Ukiyo-e collection, this ink performs well in both fountain pens and glass dip pens.

The small red azuki bean is woven into Japanese food and ceremony. It gives its name to sekihan (the celebratory red rice eaten at weddings and festivals), to oshiruko and zenzai (the warm sweet bean soups of winter), and to anko (the sweet bean paste at the heart of countless traditional Japanese sweets). The box features Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s fan print “Cats Enjoying the Cool Evening” (猫のすゞみ, c.1840s), an affectionate parody in which cats stand in for the geisha, customers, and boatmen of Ryogoku Bridge during the evening cool-off and fireworks of an Edo summer.
