TACCIA Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Budounezu Fountain Pen Ink
Budounezu (“grape gray”) is a refined purple-gray Japanese fountain pen ink. The shading shifts gently between cool gray and warm plum undertones, producing a quietly changing tone with each stroke. Made in Japan as part of the TACCIA Ukiyo-e collection, this ink flows smoothly in both fountain pens and glass dip pens.
Budounezu is a classic Edo-period color born from the late Tokugawa government’s restrictions on bright clothing for commoners. In response, townspeople developed an extraordinary range of subtle grays known as hyaku-nezu (“the hundred grays”), paired with the equally famous shijuhachi-cha (“the forty-eight browns”). Budounezu, with its plum undertone over a cool gray base, became one of the most refined of these hues. The box features Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “The Origin of the Cat Stone from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” (見立東海道五拾三次 猫石の由来, c.1845), a striking print depicting an old woman who is secretly a bakeneko (a shape-shifting cat-spirit), revealed by the giant cat shadow looming behind her.
In the writing sample, the filled wash was painted with a brush and the linework was made with a glass pen, both on YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook. The 40ml glass bottle is wrapped in packaging featuring Kuniyoshi’s original artwork. Explore more colors in our complete range of Japanese fountain pen inks.
