TACCIA Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Keshizumi Fountain Pen Ink
Keshizumi (“extinguished charcoal”) is a refined charcoal gray Japanese fountain pen ink with warm undertones. The shading moves gently between deeper graphite tones and lighter silvery highlights. Made in Japan as part of the TACCIA Ukiyo-e collection, this ink flows smoothly in fountain pens and produces expressive, tonal strokes with glass dip pens.
Keshizumi takes its name from the soft, warm gray of charcoal that has burned out. In Edo Japan, charcoal was at the heart of daily life, used to heat the kotatsu and hibachi and to fuel the iron kettles of the tea ceremony. So central was it that the laying of charcoal in the tea room (sumi-temae) became its own choreographed practice within chanoyu. The box features Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” (其のまゝ地口 猫飼好五十三疋, 1850), a witty composition in which each station of Japan’s most famous highway is represented by a cat whose name is a pun on the original place-name. Kuniyoshi was famously fond of cats and is said to have kept many of them in his studio.
In the writing sample, the filled wash was painted with a brush and the linework was made with a glass pen, both on YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook. The 40ml glass bottle is presented in packaging printed with Kuniyoshi’s original artwork. Browse our full range of Japanese fountain pen inks.
