TACCIA Ukiyo-e Kuniyoshi Kuromurasaki Fountain Pen Ink
Kuromurasaki (“black purple”) is a deep, near-black purple Japanese fountain pen ink with strong shading. Concentrated applications settle into an almost-black depth, while lighter areas reveal a clear violet undertone. Made in Japan as part of the TACCIA Ukiyo-e collection, this ink writes well in both fountain pens and glass dip pens.
In Heian Japan, deep purple was a color reserved for the highest-ranking nobility, a quiet but absolute marker of status at court. The box features Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s masterpiece “Princess Takiyasha Calling up a Monstrous Skeleton Specter at the Old Palace in Soma” (相馬の古内裏, c.1845-46). The triptych depicts the warrior Mitsukuni confronting a colossal skeleton conjured by Princess Takiyasha, daughter of the rebel Taira no Masakado, in the ruins of her father’s palace. The skeleton is drawn in remarkable anatomical detail, informed by Kuniyoshi’s interest in imported Western medical illustrations.
In the writing sample, the filled wash was painted with a brush and the linework was made with a glass pen, both on YU-SARI Fountain Pen Notebook. The 40ml glass bottle is presented in packaging printed with Kuniyoshi’s original ukiyo-e, making the box itself worth keeping. See the full range of Japanese fountain pen inks in our collection.
